Assignment Questions:
1. Using direct evidence from the novel, explain how Jean and Emmanuel’s points of view
are informed by their upbringing; how do they relate to other characters? To nationalist
ideals? What other purpose might they serve in the text?
2. Florentine’s desire to escape poverty is fueled by her father’s inability to care for the
family. In what ways are Florentine’s and Azarius’ idealist views similar? How are they
different? Why might this parallel be important in the novel?
3. How does Rose-Anna’s religious upbringing influence the other conflicts within the
novel? Why might this background be important in understanding the beliefs/motivations
of other characters (such as Florentine or Eugène)?
4. Choose a relationship between any two characters in the text and explain how they work
together to create a narrative (i.e.: pride, love, duty, etc.,) within the novel, using direct
evidence where needed.
