NUR 306 – Principles of Nutrition is a senior-level course in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at the University of Miami. The course introduces students to the fundamental principles of nutrition and their application in maintaining health and preventing disease. Students will learn about the different nutrients, the food sources of nutrients, and the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) for nutrients. They will also learn about the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of NUR 306 – Principles of Nutrition, students will be able to:
- Define and explain key concepts in nutrition
- Identify and analyze the different nutrients
- Describe the food sources of nutrients
- Explain the recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) for nutrients
- Discuss the role of diet in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases
- Apply nutrition principles to develop healthy eating plans
- Provide nutrition counseling to patients and clients
