NURS 040 is a one-credit undergraduate course that provides students with the opportunity to participate in community service activities related to nursing. Students will work with a variety of community organizations to provide nursing care, education, and support to underserved populations.
Upon completion of NURS 040, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a commitment to community service
- Apply nursing skills and knowledge to real-world community settings
- Identify and address the health needs of underserved populations
- Collaborate with other professionals and volunteers to provide effective community service
- Reflect on their community service experiences and identify areas for personal and professional growth
NURS 040 is a hands-on course that requires students to participate in a minimum of 20 hours of community service. Students will work with a faculty mentor to select a community organization that aligns with their interests and career goals. Students will then develop a learning plan that outlines the specific activities they will participate in and the knowledge and skills they hope to gain.
Students will meet regularly with their faculty mentor to discuss their experiences and to reflect on their learning. At the end of the semester, students will submit a portfolio that includes documentation of their community service hours, a reflective essay, and a plan for future community service involvement.
