NURS 050 is a one-credit undergraduate course that provides students with the opportunity to serve as mentors to their peers in the Experiential Learning Center (ELC). ELC mentors work with students to provide support and guidance as they learn and practice nursing skills in a simulated environment.
Upon completion of NURS 050, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role and responsibilities of an ELC mentor
- Apply their nursing knowledge and skills to mentor peers in the ELC
- Provide constructive feedback and support to peers in the ELC
- Model professional behavior and ethical conduct
NURS 050 is a hands-on course that requires students to mentor their peers in the ELC for a minimum of 20 hours. Students will work with a faculty mentor to develop a mentoring plan that outlines their specific goals and objectives. Students will also receive training on how to provide effective feedback, support, and guidance to their peers.
Students will meet regularly with their faculty mentor to discuss their experiences and to reflect on their learning. At the end of the semester, students will submit a portfolio that includes documentation of their mentoring hours, a reflective essay, and a plan for future mentoring involvement.

Completion of at least one semester of nursing clinical coursework GPA of 3.0 or higher Good academic standing
