NURS 130 – Substance Abuse Issues for Health Professionals is an introductory course that covers the following topics:
- The definition of substance use and abuse
- The different types of substances that can be abused
- The effects of substance abuse on the individual and society
- The risk factors for substance abuse
- The signs and symptoms of substance abuse
- The treatment options for substance abuse
- The role of health professionals in preventing and treating substance abuse
The course is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills they need to identify, assess, and intervene with individuals who are struggling with substance abuse. Students will also learn about the resources that are available to help individuals recover from substance abuse.
NURS 130 is a lecture and discussion-based course with a strong emphasis on experiential learning.
Students will participate in a variety of activities, including:

- Guest lectures from health professionals who work with individuals struggling with substance abuse
- Field trips to substance abuse treatment facilities
