NURS 727 is a graduate-level course that introduces students to the advanced practice psychiatric-mental health (APPMH) nurse role and the diagnostic process in psychiatric-mental health nursing. Students will learn about the DSM-5, the biopsychosocial model of mental illness, and the APPMH nurse’s role in conducting comprehensive diagnostic assessments.
They will also learn about various diagnostic tools and instruments, and how to use these tools to gather data and develop differential diagnoses.
Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply the DSM-5 criteria to diagnose psychiatric-mental health disorders across the lifespan.
- Utilize a biopsychosocial model to understand and assess psychiatric-mental health disorders.
- Conduct comprehensive diagnostic assessments of psychiatric-mental health clients.
- Select and use appropriate diagnostic tools and instruments.
- Develop differential diagnoses based on assessment findings.

NURS 727 is open to graduate students in the School of Nursing who have completed the following prerequisites:
- NURS 604: Advanced Pathophysiology
- NURS 606: Advanced Pharmacology
- NURS 612: Advanced Health Assessment
- NURS 715: Pathophysiology for Advanced Nursing Practice
